The Listening Room belongs more to the past than to the future. And as in the past, these pieces were fooled into existence by establishing conditions and further manipulating the events that occurred within some fairly pliant constraints. The goal was to create what might be called an intricate quiet with a minimal number of elements and distractions while following a path of escalating complexity. As the pieces become progressively more dense, more harmonically complex they extrude themselves from formlessness to an end with a more structured sense of form. This music is not intended to be narrative. While naming imparts meaning, any meaning will be difficult if not impossible to find since there is no intention to create analogies between the titles and the sounds. Equally lacking is any ideology about a representational music, outside the admittedly subjective goal of staging an “intricate quiet”.

The Listening Room is a totally satisfying ambient album that is not only aesthetically very appealing, it also has a welcome ability to bring calm to a busy mind. Whatever the circumstances in which this album is listened to it's always soothing and draws the attention. It’s one of the best ambient albums to come my way this year, indeed, sonically and artistically it's the kind of music I’ve been waiting a long time to find - no music is ever perfect, but The Listening Room isn't far off! Highly recommended.
