k. leimer | degraded certainties

play : allotropy (edit)

Extensively manipulated audio files, layered elements combined from multiple versions of shared sources, edited, reshaped envelopes and extended periods of dust collecting resulted in six pieces of minimalist / process music. Layered by arbitrarily ordering differing tone clusters at differing durations then articulated by differing voices degraded certainties uses signal reprocessing as the principal technique in determining the music’s timbre and form. Ranging in temper from the elegiac “hommage” to the steady-state “angoisse” and the referential “allotropy”, degraded certainties abandons drone and ambient by emphasizing fuller contrasts, shifts in character and a deeply detailed soundfield. With contributions from Gregory Taylor and Taylor Deupree.

play : andreas (edit)

dua_belas' title - Indonesian for “the twelve” - and tracknames hints at what awaits within before even the first moment that separates it from silence: imagined territories of otherness. Although Gregory Taylor returns to the tunings and reticulated surfaces that marked his first Palace of Lights release Amalgam: Aluminum / Hydrogen, this collection of live and studio work constitutes varied interwoven vignettes that describe a new and different landscape altogether – a postcolonial steampunk orchestra of the Royal Courts whose graceful retinue of real/virtual/analog/digital synthesizers accompany a shadow play of appropriated tales that shimmer, grind, twist and morph in the humming air.

play : subterrane (edit)

Composed with layers of computer processed, chopped and looped sounds including samples from field recordings, as well as studio recordings of accordion and other acoustic and electronic instruments Subterrane merges acoustic with electronic sensibilities into a singular music of timbral and textural sleight-of-hand. Source sounds include trains, subways, glass bottles, bamboo and bronze percussion instruments, rattles, and other folk instruments. For “Twilight Reprise” samples from his 1980 Palace of Lights album, Twilight, are recycled and reprocessed. Other pieces also include recycled slices from previous live and studio recordings but bear little resemblance to the earlier pieces from which they are borrowed. Mastered by Taylor Deupree.

play : twilight (edit)

Marc Barreca's Twilight - originally the second LP release from Palace of Lights - struck out in a distinct direction, taking steps into the ambient and industrial while carrying along a phonographic sensibility. Using sounds derived from a variety of acoustic as well as electronic sources, Twilight foreshadowed the diversity and pliability of sampled, industrial and lowercase musics, making this 1980 release remarkably prescient and resiliently fresh to this day. One of the enduring and highly-sought after albums from the original Northwest School of independent electronic music is made available again in concert with Marc’s return to Palace of Lights and his new CD Subterrane.
